Imran Khan: Mass arrests and violence as former Pakistan Prime Minister accused with corruption

day after his detention provoked widespread rallies, Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan pleaded not guilty to corruption allegations.

According to authorities, eight individuals have died as result of the protests, and over 1,000 people have been arrested. The army has deployed in several regions and issued strong warning after protesters stormed military properties. Mr Khan's incarceration heightened tensions between him and the military at time of economic distress. Conviction would bar the former cricketer, who served as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022, from running for government again, possibly for the rest of his life. Elections are scheduled for later this year.
